Learning to drive can feel overwhelming when you are not sure where to start. This step-by-step guide explains how to start learning to drive in Peterborough, from getting your provisional licence and choosing an instructor to taking your first lessons, practising your skills and preparing for the driving test.
Step 1:Get Your Provisional Driving Licence?
Before you can start driving lessons on public roads, you need a valid provisional driving licence. You can apply online through GOV.UK. Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and can read a number plate from the required distance before starting your lessons.
Step 2: Choose Between Manual and Automatic Driving Lessons
Before booking lessons, decide whether you want to learn in a manual or automatic car. A manual licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars, while passing your test in an automatic car limits your licence to automatic vehicles. Consider which option suits your confidence, driving goals and the type of car you expect to drive.
Step 3: Start Your Driving Lessons
Your first driving lessons will focus on building a strong foundation. You will usually start with basic controls, moving off and stopping safely, steering, observations and simple junctions. As your skills improve, your instructor will gradually introduce busier roads, roundabouts, manoeuvres and more complex driving situations.
Step 4: Build Experience and Prepare for Your Driving Test
As you become more confident, your lessons will cover more challenging situations such as busy junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways, independent driving and different traffic conditions. You will also practise manoeuvres and work on any areas that need improvement before taking your practical driving test.
Progress is different for every learner, so do not worry if some skills take longer to master. Regular lessons, practice and feedback from your instructor will help you become a safer and more independent driver.
